The Symptoms of Periodontitis

Posted on 9/19/2022 by Pine Belt Periodontics
The Symptoms of PeriodontitisIf you are experiencing some symptoms, you may have periodontitis: swollen gums, bleeding gums, receding gums, loose and sensitive teeth, and bad breath. Periodontitis is a form of dental infection that can lead to tooth loss and other health complications if left untreated. This blog will discuss the causes and symptoms of periodontitis in more detail.

Swollen Gums

Swollen gums are a common symptom of periodontitis. The gums may be red, tender, and inflamed. They may bleed when brushing or flossing. The painful infection makes the gums pull away from the teeth. It can lead to pockets forming between the gums and teeth where bacteria can build up and cause further irritation.

Bleeding Gums

Another common symptom of periodontitis is bleeding gums. The gums will bleed when brushing your teeth or after eating. It can signify that the bacteria in plaque are causing irritation and inflammation in your gums. If you have any symptoms, it's essential to see a dentist so they can diagnose the problem and recommend treatment.

Loose Teeth

When you have periodontitis, your gums begin to pull away from your teeth. This process is called recession. As the gum tissue recedes, the roots of your teeth are exposed. These roots aren't as protected as your tooth enamel, so they're more susceptible to decay and infection. Teeth may appear longer than usual because more of their roots are exposed.

Bad Breath

It happens when plaque and tartar build-up below the gum line and bacteria begin to grow. It can make your breath smell bad. The bad odor may be from the food you eat, smoking, or poor oral hygiene. You can use a good-quality tongue scraper to remove plaque and bacteria from your tongue. You should brush your teeth two times and floss daily. If you have bad breath persistently, see your dentist.

If you think you have periodontitis, you must see a dentist or dental hygienist for an evaluation. Call our expert clinic to set up an appointment for a consultation.
