Periodontitis in Children: What You Need to KnowDid you know that gum disease is one of the children's most common dental problems? The American Academy of Periodontology states that nearly half of all children will suffer from gum disease in adulthood. If left untreated, periodontal disease can cause several health problems for your child. This blog will discuss the causes and symptoms of periodontitis in children and how to treat it.

Poor Dental Hygiene

Children who do not brush or floss their teeth properly or do not visit the dentist regularly are more likely to develop periodontitis. It happens because plaque and tartar accumulate on the teeth and gums, which leads to inflammation. If plaque stays on teeth, it can stick and turn into tartar. The tartar is expertly eliminated by a dentist. Plaque damage and irritate the gums and cause them to become red, swollen, and sore.

One of the primary causes of periodontitis is genetics. It means that if your parents had gum disease, you're also more likely to have it. Specific genes make people more susceptible to developing gum disease. If you have these genes, you'll need to be extra careful about taking care of your teeth and gums. These genes include dental plaque bacteria, tobacco use, crooked teeth, fillings that don't fit well, and piercings in the gum line.

People with diabetes will develop infections, including periodontal disease. Diabetes can make it more difficult for the body to fight infection. Diabetic people may have trouble controlling their blood sugar levels. When blood sugar levels are high, there is more sugar in the saliva. It will make bacteria grow and cause periodontal disease. People with diabetes should see a dentist or dental hygienist regularly.
