Common Periodontic Procedures and Treatments

Posted on 7/4/2022 by Pine Belt Periodontics
Common Periodontic Procedures and TreatmentsA periodontic procedure is a dental process carried out by a periodontist to enhance the health and function of your mouth. Typically, this treatment is geared to improve the health and function of your teeth and gums. This restores the mouth to a stable state where there is less risk of future problems. A standardized periodontic treatment plan will vary, but here are some commonly proven periodontic procedures and treatments for enhancing oral functioning:

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a common procedure used to treat gum recession. It involves removing a small piece of bone from a donor site, usually your jawbone, and then placing it in the area of your gums that are receding. This will help stimulate new bone growth and help close the gap between your teeth and gums.

Root Planning

Root planing involves gently cleaning away the plaque and tartar on the root surfaces of teeth. This helps remove bacteria that can lead to tooth decay or gum disease. It also helps smooth out rough spots on the root surfaces so they can better support fillings or crowns in the future.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is an essential procedure after the infection of the pulp or it's damaged beyond repair due to decay or trauma. Root canal therapy removes all of this diseased tissue and replaces it with filling material or crown so that you can continue to eat without pain or infection in your tooth.

Periodontal Plastic Surgery

Periodontal plastic surgery may be needed to correct severe gum recession or recessions that have existed for many years. It aims to improve the way your teeth fit together when you close your mouth. This can be accomplished by removing excess gum tissue from around your teeth so that they fit together more closely when you close your mouth. During this procedure, your dentist will discuss what type of treatment (if any) may be right for you.
