Does Gum Disease Affect a Person's Facial Shape?

Posted on 2/21/2022 by Pine Belt Periodontics
Does Gum Disease Affect a Person's Facial Shape? If you have gum disease you will realize that the gums are swollen, bleeding or they change color to red. If you experience these signs in early gingival infection, it can become worse if left untreated. If you have gum disease you will experience gum inflammation and you can suffer from tooth loss and bone loss. This affects your overall oral health and your facial structure.

Effects of gum disease on facial appearance

When the bacteria affect the gum tissue it irritates and causes gum inflammation. The infection spreads beneath the gum and the teeth and bones are affected. This brings about tooth loss and the bone around those teeth deteriorates. When there is no tooth this changes your facial appearance. The nose might appear longer and deep vertical lines appear on your face. This bone loss brings about shifting of the bite and you will appear unhappy and old.

Maintaining Healthy appearance

Do not hesitate to see a dentist if you are experiencing symptoms similar to those of gum disease. You need to take care of your gums and teeth by brushing and flossing at least twice daily. Brush with fluoride toothpaste and use a soft-bristled toothbrush. This will remove the food particles that are stuck in the mouth and always remember to brush the tongue. Ensure that you also maintain regular dental visits, this will help the dentist in detecting any oral problem that might cause an oral health hazard.

Visit us if you are experiencing any form of gum disease and our dentist will guide you on how to maintain a healthy and attractive appearance.
