Do Gums Always Hurt for the Same Reasons?

Posted on 8/23/2021 by Pine Belt Periodontics
Do Gums Always Hurt for the Same Reasons?Painful gums are a very common oral problem. When you experience gum pain, bleeding, or swelling, you could be having a gum infection. Here are some common causes of gum pain.

Gum Disease

If you have bleeding, swollen, or red gums, you could be suffering from gum disease. There are many causes of gum disease; the common ones are lack of brushing and flossing your teeth. Gingivitis is the most common type of gum disease. Besides, there is a less common but more severe condition known as periodontitis. When caught early, gum disease can be treated with thorough and proper oral hygiene. We recommend that you brush and floss on a regular basis to prevent your gums from hurting. You should also use mouthwash more often. If you don't treat gingivitis, it will develop into periodontitis, which is more severe and can lead to tooth loss.

Rough Brushing and Flossing

Good and effective dental hygiene involves flossing and brushing. However, if you brush and floss your teeth aggressively, you can irritate and damage your gums. This is more likely to be the case when you are using a hard-bristled toothbrush. This is why we recommend that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush when brushing your teeth. You should also brush your teeth gently without applying excessive force. A soft-bristled toothbrush is also effective because it can clean in between teeth. This helps prevent the build-up of plaque and tartar.

Canker Sores

Also known as mouth ulcers, canker sores are non-contagious and painful sores that appear on the gums. They could also appear in other areas of the mouth. If not treated, these sores can develop and lead to various gum infections. They can also lead to gum recession. Contact our offices for more information on the causes of gum pain.
