What are Non-surgical Treatments for Periodontitis

What are Non-surgical Treatments for PeriodontitisPeriodontitis is a severe gum disease that affects the tissues surrounding the teeth, like the jawbone and the gums. Often, the choice of treatment depends on the severity of the infection. Therefore, there are several non-surgical ways to treat periodontitis:

Tooth Scaling and Root Planing

Tooth Scaling and root planing involve the thorough cleaning of the teeth and the roots to eliminate bacteria, plaque, and tartar build-up. They are the most common non-surgical treatment for periodontitis. Tooth scaling is done by the use of a tool called a scaler that scrapes out build-up. Tooth planing, on the other hand, uses a tool called a curette that smooths out the root surface to prevent further build-up. This treatment helps reduce inflammation and promote the healing of the gums.

Antibiotics

In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat periodontitis. They could be either topical or oral antibiotics. Antibiotics kill the bacteria that cause the infection and reduce inflammation in the gums. They may be administered as an oral pill that is supposed to kill the bacteria responsible for the inflammation or a gel that is supposed to be applied to the gum pocket.

Antimicrobial Mouthwash

Antimicrobial mouthwash is another non-surgical treatment for periodontitis. The mouthwash contains properties that can eliminate bacteria and promote the healing of the gums. It is recommended to add a mouthwash rinse to your daily dental routine.

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is used hand-in-hand with tooth scaling and root planing. The treatment involves using a laser to remove bacteria and infected tissue from the gums. This also helps stimulate the growth of new tissue and promote healing.

Oral Hygiene Education

One of the most effective ways to manage periodontitis is through proper oral hygiene. Patients with the condition are often advised to maintain a regular dental routine that involves brushing and flossing twice a day and adding a microbial mouthwash to their routine. They are also advised to take several precautions like avoiding smoking and eating a diet that will promote healthy teeth and gums.
