When it comes to oral health and hygiene, good health is much more than the actual teeth. The gums and tissues around the teeth are just as important. Even for those that are free from cavities and have healthy, white, teeth, the issue of gum disease is still an important risk to think about. Gum disease is most of the time painless, and most people never realize they have it until it is too late or until they are referred to a periodontist. Gum disease affects the gums, and starts when there is a build-up of plaque and bacteria along the gum line. It can cause infections that target the gums and the bone, leading to tooth decay and the eventual extraction of the teeth.
Stages of Gum Disease
The earliest stage of gum disease is gingivitis, some of the symptoms of gingivitis include tender and inflamed gums, redness and swelling of the gums and bleeding. At this stage, given that the underlying bone and the gum tissues supporting the teeth have not been affected, this damage is reversible.
The next stage of the development of gum disease is periodontitis. This is when the gum disease develops so deeply that it then impacts the bone that holds the gums in place. if left unattended, this stage of gum disease ends up affecting the gums, bones, and tissue linked to the teeth.
The final stage of the disease is advanced periodontitis. This is the stage when the fibers that hold the teeth to the bone are so impacted that they are destroyed altogether. At this stage, the bite will be completely destroyed and the teeth might need to be removed altogether. Without proper and regular care of the teeth, the risks of developing gum disease are high.
